Math: the long road

I would like to address the subject of math marks
so that I may dispel any confusion. Junior High
can be a new and challenging experience for our
youngsters. They learn to manage their time,
their resources and their efforts. Some of these
new experiences may include some learning lessons
that help them on their journey. Math in the
junior high program is very demanding and may be
difficult for students at the beginning of the
year. When the student learns to manage time and
effort with studying in a proper balance, the
transition, although not easy, will be manageable.
consistent effort is essential to success in
mathematics and junior high is included. Math
concepts introduced in grade 7 are reviewed in
grade 8 and grade 9 but given no credit at higher
levels. For example, solving a one step linear
equation is worth 2 marks in grade 7, two marks in
grade 8, one mark in grade 9 and essential but
given no part marks for the same effort in grade
10. This is by no means offered as discouragement
to students but a realization that math basics must
be mastered in order to achieve success. Retention
is essential. With this expectation, if students
work hard, their marks will steadily improve and
will only be sustained by constant and persistent
effort on their part.
Students in the past have done very well with this
method and I expect good results from the students
again this year.

Start of a new year!

Students, keep enjoying your summer holiday but
don't forget to come back to school prepared to
start a new year. I have been working on some new
ways to help you practice your mathematics but it
involves a lot of practice on your part. In
addition to daily homework assignments, there will
also be weekend assignments that will be assigned.
These assignments are mandatory and if completed
will ensure you a good mark in math. Math requires
practice; you know that now. As you know if you've
taken my class, my tests are not easy...but with
constant effort, you will do well. Enjoy the rest
of the summer and I will see you on August 31.
Mr. Yu

Grade 3/4 News

What's new(s) in our room? First of all we are
finishing up the final unit in Science: Animal
Life Cycles. Both grades also finished their
final project for the second to last Math unit.
The unit was DATA ANALYSIS. Is was a fun unit in
which the students got to gather information and
turn that information into graphs. One of the
activities we did for this unit was the gathering
and graphing of the Drydale Baby. The students
had a great time. Graph #1 was the day the baby
will be born. There were some interesting
responces. Graph #2 Girl or Boy - also
interesting. There are a large number of grade 3
and 4's who are thinking BOY. The final two
graphs were weight and length . We have some
very tiny guesses and some very large guesses.
They are all excited to see what comes from all
the choices they made on our baby. Yesterday, we
got a small start on the final unit of "Chance
and Uncertainty". This unit should take about
two weeks to compete. This will leave a few days
for review time. I hope everything is going well
for everyone and that the beautiful weather is
being enjoyed by all.

Virtual Social Studies 10-20

Hussar Virtual students are diligently working
their way through the programs of study. The
tests are administered on specific dates but
incomplete work can be submitted until the Final
Marks are assigned in June. The most
educationally sound stategy is,of course, to have
all assigned work completed before the test is
administered, however some students are exploring
alternate strategies!! Nevertheless, Yogi Bera's
comment about a baseball game is also appropiate
to our Virtual classes, "it aint over 'til it's
Over," and students can catch up. So, game on!
