Math: the long road

I would like to address the subject of math marks so that I may dispel any confusion. Junior High can be a new and challenging experience for our youngsters. They learn to manage their time, their resources and their efforts. Some of these new experiences may include some learning lessons that help them on their journey. Math in the junior high program is very demanding and may be difficult for students at the beginning of the year. When the student learns to manage time and effort with studying in a proper balance, the transition, although not easy, will be manageable. consistent effort is essential to success in mathematics and junior high is included. Math concepts introduced in grade 7 are reviewed in grade 8 and grade 9 but given no credit at higher levels. For example, solving a one step linear equation is worth 2 marks in grade 7, two marks in grade 8, one mark in grade 9 and essential but given no part marks for the same effort in grade 10. This is by no means offered as discouragement to students but a realization that math basics must be mastered in order to achieve success. Retention is essential. With this expectation, if students work hard, their marks will steadily improve and will only be sustained by constant and persistent effort on their part. Students in the past have done very well with this method and I expect good results from the students again this year. Any questions may be directed to Mr. Yu anytime
